Fortress Kyzyl Kala

KarakalpakstanUzbekistan • 90 m

This ancient building dates from the I–II centuries AD. E. According to the main version, the construction was built to strengthen and defend the territory. This necessity was dictated by the special location of Khorezma — the Great Silk Road once passed through this region. According to others, the fortress may well be the mansion of a landowner, serve as a platform for hosting a garrison, serve as a transport hub for caravans passing along this route, or be used as an agricultural center. Among the hypotheses put forward is the connection between the Kyzyl-Kala fortress and the Toprak-Kala defensive fortification. These two buildings actually had a lot in common: the layout, the use of the same building materials, the decoration of the walls and more. This even led to the appearance of the legend of a long underground passage that would have connected two outposts (has no scientific justification). For greater interest, the story was embellished with the myth of existence in a labyrinth of untold riches protected by evil spirits.
