The Shohmansur market: a page turned in Dushanbe
Once the beating heart of local commerce, the Shohmansur market - also known as the Green Bazaar - was one of Dushanbe's most emblematic landmarks. For decades, locals and visitors alike came here to buy fresh produce, discover the flavours of Tajikistan, and experience the warm, authentic atmosphere of Central Asian markets.
Today, this historic market no longer exists. The site has been razed to the ground and is now a vacant, park-like area, symbolizing the urban transformation underway in the capital. This change marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter.
In its place, commercial activities were transferred to the Mehrgon covered market, located at the foot of Victory Park. Modern and spacious, Mehrgon is now Dushanbe's main sales center for food and handicrafts. Although more structured and hygienic, it attempts to retain the spirit of the old bazaars, while meeting today's standards.
For travellers in search of local experiences, Mehrgon is now the place to go to observe daily life, sample local specialities and interact with Tajik merchants in a renewed setting.
